LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

"Northwest Voices," our letters section, is an important part of our editorial and opinion pages. Our readers share a wide range of perspectives on current issues.

The Seattle Times receives more than 15,000 letters a year, averaging about 1,200 a month. Those totals now include more than 50 e-mails every workday. When there's a hot local — or regional — topic in the news, The Seattle Times sometimes receives in excess of 100 letters to the editor a day. Because space is limited only a few of the letters submitted are selected.

The decision to publish a letter is based on clarity of thought, response to current events and the graceful art of letter writing. The Seattle Times always tries to give preference to the paper's critics in choosing letters to be published. Opinions that differ from those presented elsewhere on the editorial and opinion pages are also given priority.

If submitting a letter, please include the topic or headline and date of the article, editorial or opinion piece to which your letter refers. Letters to the editor should be 200 words or less. A writer decreases his or her chances of being selected for publication if the letter exceeds that length. Please do not submit a letter more frequently than once every three months to give other readers a chance to express their opinions. If your letter is selected for publication, you may be called for verification.

How to Submit a Letter to the Editor

You may mail, fax or e-mail your letter, but all letters must include your full name (no initials), address and telephone number(s) for verification. Only your name and city of residence are published. Letters become the property of The Seattle Times and may be edited.
