FOCUS AREAS FOR SUPPORTThe Seattle Times concentrates community support in eight key areas.
Diversity DiversityThe Seattle Times' commitment to diversity reflects our respect for the richness of the Northwest's multicultural community. We also recognize the importance of diversity in the newsroom a cornerstone to fair, accurate and representative journalism. The Seattle Times supports multicultural journalism societies and makes contributions to organizations that support people of color. The Seattle Times provides year-long news internships for minority college students and has established the Blethen Family Minority Scholarship for students attending the University of Washington and Washington State University. And our Access scholarship provides equal opportunity for disabled students. More than a decade ago, The Seattle Times launched a public service media campaign to remind people of the reasons behind the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Now more than 33 newspapers, 16 television outlets, 35 radio stations and an outdoor advertising company partner in the campaign to promote the values Dr. King represented. The Seattle Times contributes to organizations which assist women with limited resources, including support of agencies like Eastside Domestic Violence and the YWCA. And, for more than a decade, we have supported women's athletics by hosting the University of Washington's annual Husky Classic basketball tournament. Our annual Fund for the Needy campaign has been making a difference in the community since 1979, raising more than six million dollars to support agencies which provide vital services to local men, women, children, teens and the elderly. The Seattle Times also contributes to a variety of nonprofit organizations, and supports United Way of King County by providing resources for employee giving campaigns and by making a substantial annual company contribution. The Seattle Times contributes to educational and social service programs which help students pass high school equivalency exams, and provides scholarships to help students further their education. We also place a special emphasis on supporting organizations which provide food, shelter, clothing, educational opportunities and counseling for children and at-risk youth. By concentrating our environmental contribution with the Nature Conservancy of Washington, The Seattle Times is helping to ensure the future of Northwest natural resources. And our own recycling efforts have been recognized with environmental awards from the Washington State Department of Ecology, King County and the Weyerhaeuser Company. The Seattle Times makes significant contributions to the arts with leadership gifts and in-kind advertising space for local art organizations, exhibits and performances. The Seattle Times is a supporter of the Seattle Art Museum's outdoor sculpture garden and continues to sponsor major exhibits at SAM, including "Impressionism: Paintings Collected by European Museums" and "Treasures from a Lost Civilization: Ancient Chinese Art from Sichuan," which drew thousands of school children and other visitors. The Seattle Times supported Bellevue Art Museum with a leadership contribution for the construction of an extensive new art center. The Seattle Times is the leading sponsor of Books for Kids, a literacy program which promotes reading and provides new books to Washington state children who have few or no books in their homes. The Seattle Times is also the presenting sponsor of Northwest Bookfest, an annual event uniting book lovers and celebrating the power of the written word. Each year, Northwest Bookfest draws more than 25,000 people and raises more than $50,000 for the Literacy Grants Fund.
