2001 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards for Distinguished Newspaper Reporting
The 2001 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards for Distinguished Newspaper Reporting were presented on November 15 to writers from 13 regional daily newspapers. The awards were given in honor of C.B. Blethen, publisher of The Seattle Times for 26 years, from 1915 to 1941. Frank Blethen, publisher of The Seattle Times, presented the 25th annual awards at the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association (PNNA) in Seattle, Washington.

The Seattle Times Company Names New Classified Advertising Director.
Mike Lemke, senior vice president of sales at The Seattle Times Company, has named Corky Burr to the position of classified advertising director. Burr, who has been with the The Seattle Times Company for 12 years, most recently as customer marketing manager, will assume her new position Nov. 12. "I have great confidence in Corky's ability to lead our classified division into a future that has many challenges and opportunities," said Lemke. "Corky's cross-departmental experience and extensive background in advertising will contribute greatly to our ever-changing and developing business needs in Classified Advertising."

The Seattle Times Company Announces Top Management Change.
The Seattle Times Company announced today that Carolyn S. Kelly, Senior Vice President and General Manager since 1997 has been named President and Chief Operating Officer. She succeeds H. Mason Sizemore, who will retire after 36 years with the company.

The Seattle Times Company partners with LiquidSeats to offer online exchange of tickets.
The Seattle Times Company today announced that it has signed an agreement with LiquidSeats to provide an online secondary ticketing exchange on its city guide and entertainment web site, NWsource.com. The exchange, to be called NWsource StubHub, enables people in the Seattle and greater Puget Sound community to buy and sell sports, concert, theatre and other tickets directly through a convenient, trusted and easy-to-use online system.

Special Edition of The Seattle Times To Be Released at Noon Today.
The Seattle Times will publish a special midday edition today with the latest coverage of the attacks on American financial and government centers. The special edition will be available at newsstands throughout the metropolitan Seattle area starting at noon. In addition, the Web site seattletimes.com has continuing coverage as events unfold.Special edition coverage will include the latest photographs and information available on the impact of the tragedy locally, as well as nationally and internationally.

The Seattle Times Introduces "Northwest Life."
If you look for the Scene section in this Sunday's Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer, you'll discover the section has a new name: Northwest Life. The section will still have all the award-winning columns and features popular with readers ... and then some. New to the section is "Go For It," a handy feature that provides readers with a quick list of the day's best entertainment events right on the front of Northwest Life every day. Northwest Life appears weekdays and Sunday with topics of personal interest to readers, including health, interesting people, theater, books, families, food, décor and religion.

Seattle Times sponsors minority job fair.
The Seattle Times will host the regional Minority Job Fair of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, October 4-6, 2001 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bellevue.. While newspaper-industry finances are tight in the short term, newspapers continue to face a long-term imperative to diversify their staffs..."Even in down times, the newspaper industry has to find a way to keep its commitment to diversity so that when editors do have a job opening, they have a broad range of candidates ready to apply."

The Seattle Times Receives 1st place for "General Excellence" in National contest.
The Seattle Times features sections received first place for "General Excellence" in the prestigious 2001 Missouri Lifestyle Journalism contest. It was announced yesterday that from more than 1,500 entries, The Seattle Times was selected for the top honor in its division (circulation of 100,001- 300,000). The Seattle Times' streak of earning top honors extends to the past 14 years of contest eligibility. During that period, The Seattle Times won top awards 10 times, including six first-place prizes, two seconds and one third.

Advance Sunday Newspaper Returns.
The Advance edition of the Sunday Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer returns to newsstands on Saturday, May 12. The Advance edition offers readers a chance to purchase the Sunday newspaper on Saturday morning, providing an extra day to enjoy a variety of news features and advertising. Shoppers can get an early jump with the Northwest's largest classifieds featuring real estate, rentals, auto and employment opportunities. The Advance edition costs only $1.50 and is available starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday at most major retail locations in the metropolitan area.

The Seattle Times Company launches new and improved Web site.
The Seattle Times Company launched today a new and improved version of its award-winning Web site, seattletimes.com. The new design...expands the web page size by 20%, incorporates a new navigation system and enriches the online experience with more content, information and resources. The newly launched site caps a year-long series of enhancements and site evolution designed to give readers and advertisers more of what they asked for, to make the information and resources easier to find and experience.

The Center for Career Alternatives selects The Seattle Times as recipient for the "Outstanding Community Service Award.
The CCA is a local non-profit organization serving disadvantaged people in King and Snohomish Counties. Focusing on career education, employment training and job placement, the CCA is funded by United Way in addition to government grants and local businesses. The Seattle Times has been a corporate sponsor more than five years.

The Seattle Times landed top prizes at both the national and international levels. In the Pictures of the Year competition sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association and the University of Missouri, The Seattle Times won "Best Use of Photos" for large circulation newspapers...In the Society of News Design (SND) competition The Seattle Times won gold for its coverage of the trade of baseball's Ken Griffey, Jr. ...In the Awards of Excellence division, the newspaper landed 17 prizes...and The Associated Press Sports Editors also selected The Seattle Times among the nation's 10 best. Seattletimes.com Wins EPpy Award.
The Online School Guide of Seattletimes.com was named best directory application in a newspaper online service among entrants in the 2001 EPpy Awards competition...at Editor & Publisher's 12th Annual Interactive Newspapers Conference and Trade Show in Dallas. The contest...featured more than 400 entries in this, its sixth year and is regarded as one of the industry's most important honors.

The Seattle Times Company, through its regional destination Web site, NWsource.com, has partnered with KnightRidder.com, founder of Real Cities, the premier nationwide network of city and regional Web sites. The announcement by Nancy Bruner, Vice President of New Media for The Seattle Times Company, came today at Editor & Publisher's 12th annual interactive newspapers conference and trade show.

The Seattle Times Names New Editorial Page Editor.
Frank Blethen, publisher of The Seattle Times, has named James F.Vesely to succeed Mindy Cameron as editorial page editor. Vesely, who has been associate editorial page editor at The Seattle Times since 1991, will assume his new role on Monday, January 22. "Jim knows this newspaper and local issues as well as anyone I know," said Blethen. "His leadership will provide stability and help us build on the role Mindy Cameron played in making The Seattle Times an important voice in the community."

Newspaper Guild Ratifies Contract with The Seattle Times.
Members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild voted 359 to 116 to ratify a new six-year contract with The Seattle Times, ending a 49-day strike against the newspaper by the Guild.... The Communications Workers of America (CWA) which represents about 80 composing room employees at The Seattle Times also voted 45-17 to ratify their contract. "We are pleased our employees have ratified the contracts and we can begin the process of reuniting our workforce," said Mason Sizemore, president of The Seattle Times."

Seattle Times and Guild Reach Tentative Agreement
The Seattle Times is pleased to announce that a tentative agreement has been reached with the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild on a contract that could end a 45-day strike by the Guild. Terms of the agreement will be available following meetings on Thursday to finalize documents. Agreement was also reached on a contract between The Seattle Times and the Communications Workers of America (CWA).
