The Seattle Times is disappointed in the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild's vote to reject a contract offer that would return striking employees to work.
The vote, 348 to 87 against ratification, did not include over 200 Guild members who are not honoring the strike. "We are disappointed that after the assistance of the nation's top mediator and the involvement of Senator Patty Murray that our employees did not bring this strike to a conclusion," said Mason Sizemore, president of The Seattle Times.

The Seattle Times to Publish During Union Walkout.
Early this morning, members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild labor union walked off their jobs and began a strike against The Seattle Times Company. The company will continue to publish newspapers, according to Seattle Times President Mason Sizemore. "We have a commitment to our readers and to this community," said Sizemore. "We will continue to provide news and information by publishing newspapers every day as we have for over a century." Sizemore stressed that The Seattle Times has negotiated in good faith with the union and made a very fair contract offer that meets or exceeds offers recently settled by the Guild at other newspapers.

The Seattle Times Target of Strike Notice, Newspaper to continue publishing during possible walkout.
The Seattle Times Company today received notice from the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild of a planned strike. The union ... has called for a walkout beginning Tuesday, November 21 at 12:01 a.m. "This is a troubling turn of events because, ultimately, a strike benefits no one," said Seattle Times President Mason Sizemore... A federal mediator has recently joined the process.. "We respect our employees' and the union's legal right to issue a strike notice," said Sizemore. "And they, in turn, must respect that we have a responsibility to this community and to our readers and will continue to publish a newspaper."

The 2000 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards for Distinguished Newspaper Reporting
The 2000 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards for Distinguished Newspaper Reporting were presented to writers from 12 regional daily newspapers on November 2. For the 24th consecutive year, the awards were given in honor of C.B. Blethen, publisher of The Seattle Times for 26 years, from 1915 to 1941. The Seattle Times and KING 5 News host only Televised Debate Between Democrate Senate Candidates.
In their only televised meeting, Maria Cantwell and Deborah Senn, U.S. Senate candidates from Washington State, will face off in "The Seattle Times and KING 5 News Democratic Senate Debate", to be aired Sunday, September 10th at 6 p.m. on KING 5...The candidates will answer questions from the panelists and the live audience on topics ranging from education to health care and environmental issues. The League of Women Voters is coordinating the audience.

The Seattle Times and the Dallas Morning News named "Most Diversity-Balanced Dailies" in the nation.
According to a survey by Carl Morris Associates, a Reston, Virginia-based consulting firm and publisher of a newsletter on people of color and the media, the Seattle Times and the Dallas Morning News named "Most Diversity-Balanced Dailies" in the nation. "Inclusion is essential for a newspaper which must reflect its community today and help prepare its community for the future. Inclusion is a basic part of our journalistic and community stewardship," said Publisher Frank A. Blethen.

Seattle Times Company names Ken Hatch General Manager for Rotary Offset Press.
Prior to joining Rotary Offset Press, Hatch worked for twenty years at the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin in a variety of management positions, including Controller and most recently as Financial and Technology Manager. "I know that Ken's professional experience and educational background will be a strong asset in leading the team at Rotary," said Carolyn Kelly, Senior Vice President and General Manager of The Seattle Times Company.

William K. Blethen, Jr.'s title of Treasurer is expanded to "Treasurer and Corporate Risk Manager."
"This change better represents the magnitude and breadth of his responsibilities which include oversight and direction of risk management duties such as corporate insurance and worker compensation," says Numata. Society of Professional Journalists Honors The Seattle Times.
Seattle Times chief investigative reporter Eric Nalder has been awarded the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) of Western Washington's top honor - the Susan Hutchinson Bosch Award. The award honors outstanding achievement in regional journalism...The Seattle Times won 26 awards - including eleven first places and the Sweepstakes Award for large newspapers in the region.

Asian Enterprise magazine names Seattle Times Publisher Frank Blethen CEO Advocate of the Year in its 1999 national "Celebrating Asian Entrepreneurs" competition.

Seattle Times writer wins Scripps Howard award.
Seattle Times editorial writer and columnist Susan Nielsen has been awarded the Commentary award in the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism competition. Judges cited Nielsen's impressive writing, refreshing outlook, wide range of topics and insight as a basis for the award. "Lots of thought went into these pieces," according to a member of the judging committee. "And she can make you laugh out loud."

For the past 10 years, Seattle Times Publisher Frank A. Blethen has recognized outstanding Seattle Times employees with the Publisher's Circle Employee of the Year Awards. According to Blethen, this year's award-winners reinforce that "The Seattle Times is a special place for special people," and cap what Blethen called "the most successful decade in the history of The Seattle Times."

Walla Walla Union-Bulletin Publisher Debbie Frol shifts management responsibilities, filling the currently open position of Advertising Director at the newspaper. Frol has been acting in a dual role of Advertising Director and Publisher for four months while the company recruited for the advertising position. After an extensive but unsuccessful search, Frol made the decision to take the position herself. Frol has extensive management background and expertise in advertising and strong ties to the Walla Walla business community.

The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy raises record amount of $663,896.
A record year for Fund for the Needy and a 20-percent increase over last year's campaign. Over the past 21 years, the Fund has raised more than $7 million for agencies that help children and families, the elderly, and the poor. "The organizations that are supported by Fund for the Needy provide valuable social services that give hope and touch our community in so many special ways," says Will Blethen, Treasurer.

Due to a Seattle City Light power outage early this afternoon, the Advertising and Circulation Departments of The Seattle Times have experienced subsequent loss of telephone and computer usage.

Four Washington state students will journey to Ireland as winners of The Seattle Times (NIE) program's Teen Destination: Ireland 2000 contest.
"This is by far the most dynamic program we offer students through our classroom NIE program," said Ruth Rivera, Seattle Times Educational Services Manager. "Students must work hard and be diligent to rise to finalist status. But every winning student considers it the adventure of a lifetime."

Mindy Cameron receives Publisher's Circle Award for Executive of the Year.
In addition to writing editorials and columns, Cameron supervises the editorial staff and is responsible to the publisher for the content of the editorial pages of The Seattle Times, including daily decisions regarding the "editorial voice" of the newspaper. "Our editorial voice is a wonderful example of how we relentlessly pursue one of our key core values: serving the community through quality journalism," Blethen said.

In the first quarter of 2000, The Seattle Times Company, in alliance with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and InfoSpace.com, will launch NWSource.com, a new online destination site for people who live in, visit or have an interest in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. . .The site will offer a searchable web directory of URLs relevant to the Pacific Northwest; a classified channel with a comprehensive database of auto, job and real estate classified listings; a regional travel guide; a city guide with ticketing capability; message boards and chat forums; calendars for community organizations; up-to-the-minute weather and traffic information; and deals of the week for online shoppers.

The Seattle Times Company hires Patricia Mahoney-Moore as Assistant Plant Mgr, Printing.
Mahoney-Moore replaces Larry Berg, who retired in June. "This is a great place to be," said Mahoney-Moore. "The Seattle Times has an excellent reputation and it's a wonderful growth opportunity for me. I'm looking forward to the challenges here."

The national Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday to be celebrated on January 17, the third Monday of the month.
For the tenth consecutive year, media in Washington, Idaho and Oregon (and Maine for the second year) will participate during the entire month of January in a joint advertising campaign reminding the public why the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday was enacted . . .The full-page newspaper ad developed for the campaign has also been reproduced by The Seattle Times as a poster for distribution at special MLK, Jr. events and to schools in its circulation area to help reinforce the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.
