2001 SEATTLE TIMES NEWSROOM AWARDS
APME Public Service Award
The Seattle Times won this national journalism award in 2001 for "Uninformed
Consent: What patients at "The Hutch" weren't told about the experiments
in which they died," Duff Wilson and David Heath's coverage of problems
with two clinical trials at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
in Seattle. The Associated Press Managing Editors is an organization
of editors from daily newspapers nationwide.
2001 Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards
Continuing an unprecedented seven-year run of first- or second- place
awards, The Seattle Times features sections received first place for
"General Excellence" in the prestigious Missouri Lifestyle Journalism
contest. From more than 1,500 entries, The Seattle Times was selected
for the top honor in its division (circulation of 100,001- 300,000).
The Seattle Times' record of earning top honors extends through the
past 14 years of contest eligibility. During that period, The Seattle
Times won top awards 10 times, including six first-place prizes, two
seconds and one third.
Associated Press Top Ten Sports Sections
For the second year in a row, The Seattle Times daily Sports section
was selected as one of the top 10 in the nation in its circulation class
by the Associated Press Sports Editors. Additionally, Seattle Times
sports writer Les Carpenter was recognized as one of the nation's top
10 in column writing and for his feature story writing.
Best Use of Pictures
In 2001, the University of Missouri awarded The Seattle Times its top
recognition, "Best Use of Pictures," in the country's most prestigious
photography competition: Pictures of the Year.
Society of American Travel Writers
For the eighth time in 12 years, The Seattle Times Travel section was
named among the top three travel sections of major newspapers (over
500,000 circulation) in North America. In the competition, The Seattle
Times won second place, behind The New York Times.
2001 Clarion Award
Kim Barker, Anne Koch and Eric Nalder won first place in investigative
reporting in the Clarion Awards, sponsored by the Association of Women
in Communications. The team won for their series "Throwaway People"
and their coverage of the Linda David case. Given the number and strength
of stories around the country in the past year, this national award
is a particularly notable achievement.
EPpy Award - Best Directory Application in a Newspaper Online Service
The Seattle Times Guide to Schools Web site was named "Best Directory
Application" in Editor & Publisher's 2001 EPpy awards for Best Online
Newspaper Services. The Guide to Schools is the most comprehensive report
ever published on Seattle-area public and private elementary, middle,
junior-high and high schools. The guide provides a searchable database
and detailed reports on more than 600 schools, including test scores,
class size, sports programs and parent and community support.
Digital Edge Awards (Edgie)
The National Newspaper Association's New Media Federation in Washington,
D.C., awarded The Seattle Times three 2001 "Edgie" Awards for The Seattle
Times Guide to Schools, which was named "Best Vertical Site," for newspapers
with circulation of 250,000 and above.
In the 2001 SPJ competition, The Seattle Times won a total of
34 awards, including seven first place honors. The Times took first
place in comprehensive coverage, government reporting, lifestyles, short
features, feature page design, feature photography and pictorial photography.
