  • The Yakima Herald-Republic was named in the top ten daily sports sections by the Associated Press Sports Editors for work done in 2002.

2002

  • Society of Professional Journalists: 2001 Sigma Delta Chi award for Feature writing (under 100,000).


  • George Polk Journalism Award for Regional Reporting for coverage of Washington state forest fires.


  • Investigative Reports and Editors: First place for the story, "Caught by the Fire in the Canyon," the lead article in a series about the tragic and devastating wildfire that swept through the Chewuch River canyon in Washington's Okanogan National Forest, taking the lives of four firefighters. The coverage helped move the U.S. Forest Service to re-examine its fire-fighting procedures nationwide and make signifcant safety improvements.
  • C. B. Blethen Awards
    First place in the Distinguished Enterprise Reporting category, under 50,000 circulation for Jesse Hamilton's two-day series "Murders in a Small Town."

  • Association for Women in Communications
    2002 Clarion Award, under-100,000 circulation category for Newspaper Investigative Series for "Trapped at Thirtymile." The Clarion Awards is a renowned competition recognizing the best works from all communications fields.
