A GUIDE TO SUBMITTING DIGITAL ADS

Distiller settings

Setting up for success

  1. Open Acrobat Distiller (4.0 or higher). The Job Options only need to be done once. Once saved, settings can be accessed though the pulldown menu from Distiller's main window.
  2. General Tab: Under File Options, compatibility: Acrobat 4.0 — everything else off; resolution: 1200 dpi, binding to the left.
  3. Compression Tab: Do not downsample images. Downsampling can reduce the size of the PDF, but may reduce image quality. For compression of color bitmap images and grayscale images, use ZIP with a quality of 8-bit. For monochrome bitmap images, use ZIP compression. Do not use JPEG or automatic compression they can affect image quality. ZIP is a "lossless" compression setting, so images won't be affected. Make sure Compress Text and Line Art options are checked.
  4. Font Tab: Embed All Fonts. Do not select the Subset Fonts option. Under "When Embedding Fails", cancel job, this will let you know that your fonts were not open and ready to embed when you made the Postscript file.
  5. Color Tab: Select the "Leave Color Unchanged" option; all other options should be left unselected.
  6. Advanced Tab: Select only "Process DSC" and "Resize Page And Center Artwork For EPS Files". Do not select any other options in this filed. If your file is color, it will output as CMYK process color for newspaper production. "Default Page Size" needs to be larger than your document size to avoid cropping off the image area.
  7. Your saved settings can be copied from one computer to another. Choose "Save As" and name the settings, such as "Seattle Times," and "Save."
  8. Open your Postscript file and save the PDF to the correct folder. This is a perfect time to double check the file name since this is the last step in creating your PDF.
  9. Remember: Always preview your file in Acrobat Exchange before uploading it to our site to ensure the ad's accuracy.
